Recently I’ve been writing a lot about choices; The idea that we are constantly faced with decisions in our lives, and the choices we make in those moments directly affect what the outcome of our lives will be.
I do believe that we never have to do anything which we feel takes us away from the greater life goal we are working to accomplish - I write more about life goals in a recent piece “Life Goals”, in Theories and Philosophy.
Along with believing we don’t have to, I also think it is important for me to discuss the single reason I believe we actually shouldn’t do anything we don’t want to.
So here’s the one reason why I believe we shouldn’t do anything we don’t want to.
You’re The One Who Has to Live With Your Life
And that really says it all. The single reason I believe we shouldn’t do anything we don’t want to in life is because, we are the one’s who at the end of it all need to live the life.
I often say, “Nobody can die for you, so why live for anyone?”. Why live a life dictated by anyone else but you? We are the ones who must live with the consequences and benefits of our actions, so why choose an action that has been made for us by someone else?
Every little decision we make directly impacts the outcome of our day, our days impact our weeks, weeks impact month’s, month’s impact years, and years impact our lives; Once we realise that the decisions we make impact our overall lives, we begin to understand how we choose the life we want based on the decisions we make for our lives each day.

I use the examples of jobs and education a lot because, these are the two situations I see most around me on a daily basis, and has directly impacted me, especially with work. If we choose to remain at a job we don’t like, and don’t want to be at, then we are directly the cause of our own unhappiness, because we don’t have to be there; so whatever reason we give ourselves for being at that job, we’re still the ones who have to live the life we aren’t happy with - No one else is directly unhappy because of that decision but you.
The same thing goes with our education; If we choose to sacrifice studying a course we actually want to, to study something we don’t want to, to please our parents - when we complete our education without the skills we require to get the sort of job we want, our parents don’t have to live that life for us, we do, and they don’t have to work at those jobs we don’t want to, we do.
So, no matter our reasoning for making a decision to go down a path in life which we don’t actually want to - when it’s all said and done, whatever life comes from it will be ours to live with. Why not choose to do the things you actually want to? That way, you directly choose the life you end up having.
