I realised something rather profound the other day; In anything we want to accomplish there’ll come a point when it all starts slowing down a bit, because it starts getting more and more difficult to keep moving forward. Like climbing up a hill, initially it’s quite easy at the bottom making your way up, then as the hill begins to incline each stride is a bit more difficult and takes a bit more effort.
As we continue on our figurative ascendance towards our goals, and it begins to get difficult, requiring more effort, we start giving excuses or “reasons” why it’s too difficult to take the next step, like - I have a great app idea but I don’t know how to code so I can’t build it, or, I’d love to go travelling for a month but I’ll have to leave my job, and, I’d start my own business but I’ll have to get funding somehow to finance the idea. Then I realised, all those “reasons” we give ourselves are the key to our success; they are literally the things we need to do to get going - to be successful.

If you know the only reason you haven’t built that great app is because you can’t code, then isn’t the solution to learn how to code, or find someone who can? If you’d love to go travelling for a month but would have to leave your job, then isn’t that literally the thing you have to do? And if all you believe you need to start your own great business is funding, then isn’t that the key - to go get funding?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying those things are going to be easy to do, but I am asking - Isn’t that the thing that you must do?
I’ve recently started doing exactly that, because I also used to hesitate and end up not doing the thing that’s so clearly the next move imperative to my success; I also used to say “I could do it, the only thing is I’d have to …(insert excuse here)”, so I decided to stop doing that. I realised, the excuses I give myself are quite literally the exact thing I need to do, in order to take the next step to success in whatever I’m trying to accomplish.

It definitely isn’t easy, but whenever I find myself giving an excuse as to why I can’t reach the next phase of my plan, I realise that I most definitely have to do that thing so that I can move on to the next phase - Because taking the next step is what brings us closer to the success we so crave. When I started looking at it like that I realised that I had always known the next thing I needed to do, I just used to chalk it up to it being too difficult, so I called it a reason I can’t, instead of realising it’s the next step.
The excuses we give ourselves are the things we need to do to succeed - so do them.
I believe the key to our success is doing those difficult things which; if we don’t do them, we always look back on them and call them “reasons” why we couldn’t succeed, but if we do them, they’re simply a difficult step we had to overcome.
That’s just what I think about it.
